One of my all time favorite authors is J.K. Rowling. I think her writing is some of the best out there. When I found out that she had written a fairy tale during the pandemic, I knew I had to read it!
The Ickabog is hilarious, sweet, thought provoking, sad (in some parts), heartwarming and just a true delight to read! It is about a kingdom and how the inhabitants are scared of the Ickabog, a secretive monster, who lives in the forest. In true J.K. Rowling fashion, you love the good guys for saving the day and are glad when the stupid bad guys get their come-up-pence! She just writes so masterfully!
What I loved most about this story was it's background. The introduction to the book tells the readers that this used to be a story J.K. Rowling would tell her children as a bedtime story. During the pandemic of 2020, she decided to publish it online so children all over the world who were stuck inside could have something new to read. She even had an illustration contest where children could submit their pictures about The Ickabog. Then when the book was published, the winners were featured in the book as colored pictures! The artwork was breathtakingly beautiful. There are some very talent kiddos out there!
I really, really, really, enjoyed my time with The Ickabog and I hope you do too!
Now, go and READ!
